OBC Group was proud to be nominated in two categories, taking honours in the most prestigious category – Large Business Awards - at the annual awards gala evening at the World Trade Centre. In the Entrepreneur of the Year award, OBC Group’s MD Tony da Fonseca was ranked one of the top three leading entrepreneurs. But it was in the competitive Large Business Award category that OBC really excelled.

“We are delighted to have won this accolade again this year, which shows the level of maturity that this business has achieved and also illustrates the resource we back-up our franchisees with. Our growth comes from satisfying our customer’s needs so each and every person in our operation who interacts with our consumer forms part of this accolade. I wish to thank the South African Portuguese Chamber or Commerce for providing a credible and reputable platform that promotes business excellence in South Africa.”, Tony da Fonseca, MD of OBC Group, said.

The Large Business Award category is SAPCC’s most prestigious award and celebrates the top performing companies that are owned or managed by Portuguese or are of Portuguese descendant operating in South Africa and who have made a significant impact in the marketplace and in the community.

The Awards were attended by the Portuguese Ambassador to South Africa, António Ricoca Freire, the Portuguese General Consul, Luísa Fragoso, the AICEP Portugal Global Trade & Investment Agency, the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency, Gauteng Investment Centre, Department of Transport, local and regional business leaders, politicians, and professionals from a multitude of sectors from across the country.

Rui Marto, a director of SAPCC and one of the five judges that evaluated the OBC’s 81-page category entry, said that the panel received high quality entries in all categories and the most competitive was the Large Business category.

“The judges’ panel was very impressed with quality of entries submitted to the SAPCC Standard Bank Business Excellence Awards 2016.  The most competitive category was the Large Business Category.  OBC Group submitted a high quality entry.  The judges were impressed by, amongst others, the sustained growth of the business, the impressive figures, clear vision of the leadership of the Group and the nationwide presence of the business.  OBC has achieved award winning results.  It is a great South African - Portuguese success story.” Rui Marto said.

Despite a challenging trading environment in the last 12 months, OBC has doubled the size of its corporate footprint within the network and grew sales close to 30% on average across all stores. The OBC group is the franchisor of OBC Chicken & Meat, an award winning food retail network with over 50 franchised stores across all provinces in South Africa, and enjoys a strong brand presence in the marketplace. It continues to prove that success in retailing lies in building up a sustainable brand over the long term and winning the customers’ support with range, quality and value for money. Established in 1987, the OBC Group is today a wholesaler and retailer of reference within the low to mid-income consumer segments, defined as LSM levels 3 to 6 - the largest and fastest- growing consumer segment in South Africa, with more than 40 million people.
